Design that changes lives
While working with vulnerable women across Northern Mozambique, from Pemba to Nacala, we saw one need in common: an immense need for economic opportunity.
The Liberty Project equips women with skills, literacy, and a renewed sense of identity - but without work, vulnerability remains.
That’s why we created Liberty Design Studio: a for-profit, for-good social enterprise bringing the artistry of Mozambican women to customers around the world.
Every handcrafted piece provides fair income for artisans, while a minimum of 25% of our profits are reinvested into The Liberty Project - supporting training, literacy, and healing for women moving from oppression to freedom.
Together, we can bring freedom, empowerment, and lasting change to women in Northern Mozambique - impacting communities for good, for the long run.
Stories of freedom
Ima
Ima joined Liberty in 2019 and today leads our Artisanal Development team while also working as a skilled seamstress. Her income not only supports her but also allows her to house, feed, and send her younger sister and cousin to school. Her salary growth reflects her commitment, leadership, and talent.
Maria
Maria came to Liberty in 2023 as a newly widowed mother. Through sewing, she has built skills making items like tote bags and handcrafted animals, and is now training to create more advanced products. Her work provides for her daughter and newborn son, Laurinho, named after our Founder Laura, giving her family a brighter future.
Why Northern Mozambique?
Nacala is a port city in Northern Mozambique, marked by limited opportunities for women. Many face unemployment, lack access to education, and struggle to provide for their families. These challenges often keep women trapped in cycles of poverty and vulnerability.
